In 1840 the nation of New Zealand was born when Maori chiefs signed a treaty with the British at nearby Waitangi. The area is rich with historic sites--Kemp House from 1822, the Stone Store from 1833--but it is the beautiful Bay of Islands itself which is the main attraction.
